kEVIN ASPAAS' PROGRAM - CANCELLED FOR 4/24/2025
(dUE TO fAMILY eMERGENCY)
APRIL 24, thursday EVENING meeting - kEVIN ASPAAS

Thursday evening, April 24, 6:30 a.m. (Social time at 6:00 p.m.), weaver Kevin Aspaas will give a presentation in person on Navajo weaving including wedge weave, for which Kevin is well known. Wedge weave was first developed in the mid-nineteenth century and produces stunning textiles with unique scalloped edges and zigzag patterns. The rug in front of Kevin is an example of this technique.
Kevin Aspaas is a Navajo textile and fiber artist. Known for his work with the Navajo wedge weave technique, Aspaas practices a process he calls “sheep to loom”. This process entails gathering and spinning wool from the small flock of Navajo Churro sheep he raises in Shiprock, NM. In addition to spinning his own yarn, Aspaas works exclusively with natural dyes noting that “… producing textiles in the manner that his ancestors have done, honors not only his relatives from the past, but also the land and animals.”
